La Spezia
City on the gulf between the Cinque Terre, Portovenere and Lerici, grown around the naval arsenal established by Cavour in 1853. Today it is a port, a naval base and the gateway to the riviera: thirteen seafaring villages compete every year in the Palio del Golfo, and a university campus of the Genoa university trains nautical engineers and designers.

Overview
What kind of city
La Spezia overlooks the gulf that Napoleon — according to the national tourism portal — called "the most beautiful in the universe", between the Cinque Terre, Portovenere, Lerici and Tellaro. The turning point of its history came in 1853, when Cavour moved the Kingdom of Sardinia's naval arsenal here from Genoa: a walled town of about 3,000 people became a major naval base. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was a Grand Tour stop and the poets Byron and Shelley stayed here, hence the name Gulf of Poets.
Port, villages, campus
Today the city is often used as a starting point for the riviera, but it has a centre of its own with via del Prione, the renovated piazza Giuseppe Verdi and the Costantino Morin seafront promenade. The thirteen seafaring villages of the gulf compete every year in the Palio del Golfo, on the first Sunday of August. The former Falcomatà military hospital compound hosts the Campus Universitario della Spezia, where the University of Genoa teaches its nautical courses, with laboratories inside the Naval Arsenal.
