Overview

What kind of city

Bergamo has two faces: Città Alta, the old hilltop core rich in medieval remains, enclosed by the walls built by the Republic of Venice in the mid-16th century and recognised by UNESCO in 2017, and the modern city spreading below. For more than 120 years a funicular has linked the two.

In Città Alta, on Piazza Vecchia, the university was born in 1968; it became a state university in 1992 under the name Università degli Studi di Bergamo and today has economics-and-law, humanities and engineering (in Dalmine) campuses.

Connections

The TEB tram links the city with the Val Seriana, running from Bergamo station to Albino, while the second line, towards Villa d'Almè, is being prepared: TEB has announced that its overhead lines are permanently energised from 19 October 2026. Milan Bergamo airport, at Orio al Serio, is reached from the station by ATB bus in about ten minutes; trains run from the city station.
