Shopping and markets

Monti has no neighbourhood market of its own. The reference covered market is the Nuovo Mercato Esquilino in via Principe Amedeo, ten minutes' walk beyond via Cavour, with a multi-ethnic food hall and a clothing section. Supermarkets in the rione are few and small-format, with historic-centre prices; some grocers, a couple of bakeries and greengrocers survive in via Urbana and via Panisperna. For the weekly shop many residents go to the Esquilino or use home delivery.

Services, health, schools

Pharmacies are on via Nazionale, via Cavour and via Panisperna. The nearest hospital with an emergency department is San Giovanni-Addolorata, in the south-eastern part of the rione towards the Lateran; the Policlinico Umberto I is beyond Termini. There are state nursery and primary schools and historic licei in the via Cavour and Viminale area.

For public libraries the reference is the Biblioteche di Roma network: the branches nearest the rione are in the historic centre (Pigna area) and on the Esquilino; Monti itself has several independent bookshops.

Green space and leisure

Green space is scarce: the Colle Oppio park above the Domus Aurea, with a view of the Colosseum and a playground, and the hanging garden of Villa Aldobrandini on via Nazionale, open during the day and overlooking Trajan's Markets. For running people go to Colle Oppio or down to the Circus Maximus.

In the evening the rione lives around piazza della Madonna dei Monti, via del Boschetto, via Urbana and via Leonina: wine bars, cocktail bars, trattorie, pizzerie and ice-cream shops, with a mixed clientele of residents and visitors. Galleries, vintage shops and young artisans' workshops have replaced the old trades. The Palazzo delle Esposizioni on via Nazionale is the rione's cultural centre.
