Historic centre

The Historic Centre of Naples has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995: the grid of Greek Neapolis, refounded in 470 BC, is still legible. It does not coincide with a municipalità: the quarters of the ancient centre are split between municipalità 2 and 4, while the UNESCO property also extends to the Royal Palace and Castel dell'Ovo. Federico II's historic buildings are here.

UNESCO heritage

The Historic Centre of Naples has been on the World Heritage List since 1995 (criteria ii and iv). The protected property covers 1,021 hectares, with a buffer zone of 1,350, and is larger than the ancient core alone: the UNESCO entry names, among others, Santa Chiara, San Lorenzo Maggiore, San Domenico Maggiore, the Royal Palace, Castel Nuovo and Castel dell'Ovo.

The site was settled from the ninth century BC as Parthenope or Palaepolis and refounded as Neapolis in 470 BC; the rectangular grid of the Greek foundation is still recognisable. According to UNESCO, the property's weak point is the poor maintenance of the non-monumental urban fabric, while its setting is not threatened by new development.

Municipalità and quarters

The historic centre is not an administrative unit. The quarters of the ancient centre belong to Municipalità 2, which groups Avvocata, Montecalvario, Mercato, Pendino and San Giuseppe-Porto, and to Municipalità 4, which includes San Lorenzo together with Vicaria, Poggioreale and Zona Industriale. The UNESCO property goes beyond these quarters: it also includes the Royal Palace and Castel dell'Ovo.

University

The central seat of the Federico II University is at corso Umberto I 40: the foundation stone was laid on 28 October 1896 and work began in 1899. The university complex on via Mezzocannone was inaugurated in November 1913 with the Chemistry and Physics institutes; in the Second World War it was badly damaged by bombing, followed by reconstruction and works after the 1980 earthquake.

Living

  • Cost of living

Naples costs less than the big northern cities for rent, groceries and eating out, but the old centre and the seaside districts have seen sharp rises with tourism. Integrated public transport is cheap. The tourist tax rose in early 2026 and again in March 2026. The cheapest zones are the eastern and northern outskirts and the Fuorigrotta-Soccavo belt.

  • Housing

Historic buildings in a UNESCO site where upkeep of the ordinary fabric is the weak point UNESCO identifies. The centre's quarters are in the Campi Flegrei yellow zone; Montecalvario is partly in the red zone too. Reference OMI values are in the data below.

  • Daily life

Public green space consists of small neighbourhood parks: Parco Viviani, Parco dei Ventaglieri and Parco dei Quartieri Spagnoli. Federico II's historic seats and libraries lie between corso Umberto I, piazza Bellini and via Monteoliveto.

Arriving and staying

  • Entry & residence

Rules depend on who is arriving: EU/EEA/Swiss citizens (no visa, registration with the Comune after three months), non-EU citizens for stays up to 90 days (Schengen rule, type C visa where required) and for long stays (national type D visa and a residence permit within eight working days of arrival).

  • Transport

Line 1 crosses the centre with Museo, Dante, Toledo, Municipio, Università and Duomo stations; at Municipio you change for Line 6. From Montesanto the Cumana runs to Fuorigrotta, Bagnoli and Pozzuoli and the Circumflegrea to Licola.

  • Health

The city is covered by ASL Napoli 1 Centro, organised in ten primary health districts (from 24/73 to 33). The ASL runs five city hospitals (Ospedale del Mare, San Giovanni Bosco, San Paolo, Loreto Nuovo, Pellegrini) and publishes first-aid posts and ambulance stations. Bookings at the CUP desks in its facilities, in pharmacies or online with Campania in Salute.

Work and study

  • Work

Naples' economy is based on services and public administration, with the port (passengers, cruises, freight), fast-growing tourism, health care and an ICT and aerospace cluster revolving around the university and the large companies based in San Giovanni a Teduccio and the metropolitan area. Employment rates are among the lowest of Italy's big cities.

  • Study

Naples hosts Federico II (1224), among the world's oldest state universities, L'Orientale, Parthenope, the private Suor Orsola Benincasa and sites of the Vanvitelli university (Caserta). Student support is run by ADISURC. Campuses are spread between the historic centre, Fuorigrotta (Monte Sant'Angelo) and San Giovanni a Teduccio, home to Engineering and the Apple Developer Academy.

  • Climate & environment

Mild Mediterranean climate, with rainy winters and hot humid summers. Naples lies between two active volcanoes monitored by INGV: Vesuvius, dormant since 1944, and the Campi Flegrei, in a bradyseism phase with ground uplift and frequent earthquakes since 2023, at yellow alert level. Parts of the city fall within the red zones of the evacuation plans.

  • Culture & relationships

A country of strong local identities: dialects still spoken at home, cuisines and festivals that differ from region to region. Formality with 'Lei', rigid meal times, slow paper-based bureaucracy. Non-EU citizens with a long-stay permit sign an integration agreement with credits.
