Universities

The University of Florence (UniFi), with its rectorate in piazza San Marco, is spread across the city: humanities and architecture are in the centre (piazza Brunelleschi, Santa Verdiana, San Marco), the Novoli campus hosts economics, law and political science, the Sesto Fiorentino science campus the sciences, Careggi medicine, while agriculture and design have sites at Quaracchi and Calenzano. English-taught offerings include master's degrees and doctorates listed on the international site. The system is completed by the European University Institute in Fiesole (doctorates and master's in the social sciences), the Academy of Fine Arts, the Cherubini Conservatory, Polimoda and IED for fashion and design, the Fiesole School of Music and dozens of US and European university programmes that bring thousands of students to the centre every year.

Student support

DSU Toscana (the regional agency for the right to university education) runs in Florence grants, fourteen residences with about 1,900 beds and ten canteens in the city plus others in the campus municipalities; the call opens in summer and allocates by ISEE income and merit; beds are in high demand and should be applied for well in advance. University students get discounted bus and tram passes through Autolinee Toscane and the Region.

Where students live

Novoli and Rifredi are the most affordable student districts, linked by tram to the campuses and the station; Statuto and San Jacopino are close to the campus and the centre; Santa Croce-Sant'Ambrogio, San Frediano and the centre mainly house students of the foreign and fashion programmes. Competition with tourism makes the room search long: start in June. The busiest study libraries are the Oblate, the National Central Library and the university libraries at Novoli and piazza Brunelleschi.
