Getting around the historic centre

The Linea Rossa tram crosses the centre from Porta San Felice to via Indipendenza, running on battery power with no overhead wires; via Indipendenza will become pedestrian with the tram running through it. The Comune expects service to start in 2027. The Linea Verde will start from via dei Mille.

The Linea Rossa in the centre

The first tram line enters the centre at Porta San Felice, whose square is being redesigned as a hub. From via Saffi the tram runs on battery power, with no overhead contact line, so as not to affect the architecture of the centre. On via San Felice and via Ugo Bassi it runs on double track, with a single-track loop using via delle Lame and via Riva di Reno; it then continues along via dell'Indipendenza, which is to be permanently pedestrianised: besides the tram, only authorised vehicles and goods deliveries in set time slots will be allowed.

The planned stops on and around via Indipendenza are piazza VIII Agosto, Porta Galliera (near the bus station) and via Matteotti just north of the junction with via de' Carracci. Porta Galliera and Matteotti/Alta Velocità form the interchange hub with the central station, high-speed rail, the People Mover to the airport, the bus station and car and bike sharing.

Linea Verde and timing

The Linea Verde will have its terminus on via dei Mille, at the junction with via Indipendenza, with an accessible central platform, and from there will follow the Linea Rossa route as far as piazza dell'Unità in Bolognina.

According to the Comune's schedule, works on the Linea Rossa began in April 2023 and entry into service is planned for 2027.
