Safety in Venice: acqua alta, crowds, rules

A city with low violent crime but frequent pickpocketing at crowded points (Santa Lucia station, line 1 and 2 vaporetti, San Marco, Rialto). The specific risk is acqua alta: subscribe to the Tide Centre alerts, know the sirens and the walkway routes. The municipal regulation fines swimming in canals, sitting on monuments and cycling in the historic centre.

Acqua alta: how to prepare

The municipal Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree publishes forecasts, real-time data and warnings; the «Centro Maree Avvisa» Telegram channel sends alerts for sustained and exceptional tides. The city sirens sound a few hours before the peak with a signal followed by rising tones: the more tones, the higher the forecast tide. The municipality lays raised walkways along the main routes, shown on official maps, and the MOSE reduces the most serious events but does not eliminate them in the lowest areas.

Those living or working on the islands should know the height of their ground floor against the Punta della Salute reference level, keep tall boots and door barriers for homes and shops, and not rely on generic weather forecasts: the astronomical tide, the scirocco and air pressure are what matter.

  • Pickpocketing: watch out at Santa Lucia station, on crowded line 1 and 2 vaporetti, at Rialto and in St Mark's Square; violent crime is rare and the calli are considered safe even at night.
  • Fined municipal rules: no swimming or diving in canals, no sitting or picnicking on the steps of monuments and bridges, no bicycles in the historic centre, no feeding pigeons, decent dress in churches; the #EnjoyRespectVenezia campaign summarises the urban police regulation.
  • Near the water: quaysides have no railings and at night, in fog or acqua alta, people fall in; take care with children and after drinking. Canals are traffic routes: do not swim or cross by boat without experience.
  • Tourist scams: gondoliers and water taxis have official fares published by the municipality; restaurants without displayed prices and unauthorised «guides» should be avoided.
  • Emergencies: single number 112; on the islands ambulances and fire services operate by boat; the Civile hospital has the historic centre's emergency department, the Angelo the mainland's.
