Cost of living in Venice

The historic centre is among the most expensive places in Italy for housing, eating out and tourist transport; residents pay reduced vaporetto fares with Venezia Unica. Mestre and the mainland have the prices of a mid-sized northern city. Goods transport by water weighs on everything bought on the islands.

What costs more and what costs less

In the historic centre almost everything costs more than elsewhere: OMI quotations for San Marco and the central sestieri are among the highest in Italy for rents and sales, restaurants and bars in tourist areas charge visitor prices and even groceries reflect goods carried by hand and boat. The single vaporetto ticket for non-residents is the dearest urban transport in the country; residents and registered domiciled people get the Venezia Unica card with reduced fares and monthly passes, also valid on mainland buses and trams.

Cheaper: the bacari with cicchetti and an ombra of wine (the local way of eating standing up), the Rialto and mainland markets, civic museums for residents, and everything in Mestre and Marghera, where rents and services match a mid-sized Veneto city. A car does not exist in the historic centre: no fuel, parking or insurance, but the Tronchetto and Piazzale Roma garages are expensive if you keep one.

Where to save

On the islands the lowest rents are in eastern Castello (Via Garibaldi, Sant'Elena), the Giudecca, Santa Marta and parts of Cannaregio; the Lido has intermediate prices and the advantage of cycling. On the mainland central Mestre, Carpenedo, Marghera and Favaro offer one-bedroom flats at prices that buy a room on the islands, with the train or tram to Venice in ten to twenty minutes.

Students use the residences and grants of ESU Venezia, the regional student-support agency, and look for rooms in Santa Marta, Cannaregio, Castello and in Mestre near the Via Torino science campus. Students of the historic centre's universities are exempt from the access fee.
