Climate and air in Turin
Continental lowland climate at the foot of the Alps: cold, damp winters with fog and temperature inversions, hot summers. In the cold months Turin is consistently among the Italian provincial capitals with the most days above the PM10 limit; Arpa Piemonte publishes a bulletin and anti-smog measures.

Seasons
Turin sits at the western end of the Po plain, at about 240 metres, closed by the Alps to the west and the hill to the east. Winter is cold, grey and with little wind: temperature inversions trap humidity and pollutants and fog is frequent between November and January, although less than in the past. Snow falls in the city on a few occasions a year.
Summer is hot and muggy in the centre, with afternoon thunderstorms approaching from the Alps; the hill and the parks along the Po are the coolest places. Spring and autumn are the wettest and also the most pleasant seasons. The föhn, a warm dry wind descending from the Alpine valleys, brings clear days with the mountains sharp on the horizon.
Air quality
Air quality is the main environmental problem. In the annual reports of the national environmental protection system (SNPA) Turin regularly appears among the provincial capitals with the highest number of days above the daily PM10 limit, concentrated between October and March. The causes are traffic, heating and the shape of the Po basin, which disperses little.
Arpa Piemonte publishes a PM10 forecast bulletin and runs the regional anti-smog traffic light: when the orange or red level is triggered, the municipality restricts the most polluting vehicles and lowers heating limits. People with asthma or respiratory conditions should weigh this when choosing a district (areas near the main traffic arteries are the most exposed).
