Climate and hazards

Continental plain with fog and cold winters, Alps with snow from November to April, drier hills. Recurrent flood risk on the Po and Tanaro; low seismicity (zones 3 and 4). Air in the plain is among the worst in Europe for PM10.

Three climates

The plain (Turin, Novara, Vercelli, Alessandria) has a continental climate: cold winters with persistent fog and frost days, hot humid summers with thunderstorms. The Langhe and Monferrato hills are a little windier and drier. The Alpine valleys have long winters: in the ski resorts (Sestriere, Bardonecchia, Alagna, Limone) the season normally runs from December to April, with snow cover varying from year to year. Lake Maggiore softens winter in the Verbano area.

Floods and seismicity

Piedmont is one of the Italian regions most exposed to floods: the events of November 1994 and October 2000 (Po, Tanaro, Dora) and October 2020 (Sesia, Vercelli and Biella areas) shaped regional planning. Arpa Piemonte publishes the colour-coded hydro-meteorological alert bulletin; anyone looking for housing on floodplains or at valley mouths should check the PAI hazard maps. Seismic risk is low: all Piedmontese municipalities fall in zones 3 and 4 of the national classification, with the higher band (3) concentrated in the Pinerolo, Cuneo and Alessandria areas.

Air quality

Air quality in the plain is the most serious environmental problem: the Turin basin and the Po valley accumulate PM10 and nitrogen oxides in windless winters. In 2024, according to SNPA, 80 of the 96 Italian monitoring stations above the daily PM10 limit were in the Po basin. Piedmont runs a traffic-light anti-smog protocol that restricts the most polluting vehicles in the plain municipalities from October to March.
