The university
The Università degli Studi di Trento, founded in 1962 as an institute of sociology, is today a general university with about ten departments and centres. In the city centre are Law, Economics and Management, Humanities, Sociology and Social Research and the School of International Studies; on the Povo hill the departments of Physics, Mathematics, Cellular Biology (CIBIO), Information Engineering and Computer Science, next to the Fondazione Bruno Kessler; in Mesiano Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering; in Rovereto Psychology and Cognitive Science and the CIMeC for neuroscience. A medical school has been started in cooperation with Verona.
The university consistently ranks among the first in Italy for research quality and services; a substantial share of master's degrees and all doctorates are in English, with double degrees and international agreements. The student-to-staff ratio is favourable and the central university library (BUC) on Via Verdi is open until late evening. The city also hosts the Bonporti Conservatory and the Bernardo Clesio merit college.
Student support and housing
The Opera Universitaria, a body of the autonomous Province, manages scholarships, housing places and canteens through a single annual call based on ISEE income and merit; Trentino grants are among the most generous in Italy and also cover international students with translated and legalised income documents. The main residences are the San Bartolameo student hall (south of the centre, with sports field, climbing gym and theatre), the Mayer residence in the centre and scattered flats; in Rovereto the Barelli residence. Canteens are in the centre, San Bartolameo, Povo and Mesiano.
On the private market students look for rooms in San Bartolameo, Bolghera, Clarina, the centre and Povo; the search should start in summer. The University has a welcome office for international students and researchers that handles permits, tax code, residence and housing, and Italian courses for foreigners.
