The university
The University's history page states there is no official founding date: the first documented date is a podestarile decree of 26 December 1240, with the Studium organised directly by the Comune. In 1357 Emperor Charles IV recognised it among the universities of the Empire; faculties added in the twentieth century include Pharmacy (1933), Engineering (1992) and Political Science (1997). The university site lists the Arezzo campus, the local seats, the School of Economics and Management, the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, orientation and tutoring, psychological support, grants and incentives.
Residences, canteens and the call
DSU Toscana reports 9 residences with 1,200 beds in Siena; its city page, which names eight residences in Siena and two in Monteriggioni (the count does not match the stated total), lists XXIV Maggio (temporarily closed for works), Sperandie, San Marco, Sallustio Bandini, Piccolomini, De Nicola, Fontebranda, Mattioli and, in Monteriggioni, Peppino Impastato and La Tognazza. The canteens listed are Self Service San Miniato (via De Nicola 9), Sant'Agata (via Sant'Agata 1), Policlinico Le Scotte (viale Bracci 16) and the one at the Università per Stranieri (piazzale Carlo Rosselli 27/28). For 2026/2027 the call for scholarships and housing is open; housing summonses are valid from 15 to 26 October 2026 and results are on the Sportello Studente.
Transit for students
The city executive has confirmed for 2026/2027 the reduced local public transport fares for university students; the DSU page points to Autolinee Toscane and the regional Travel Planner.
