Climate and air: anti-smog ordinance no. 53/2026 and extra measures

From 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 Reggio Emilia restricts the most polluting vehicles in the urban area, with an ecological Sunday every week and emergency measures based on the Arpae bulletin. Until 31 December the city adds bans on biomass and outdoor burning, more checks and smart working.

Traffic restrictions

Municipal ordinance no. 53/2026 bans, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 18:30, in the urban area shown on the attached map, petrol and LPG or methane bi-fuel vehicles Euro 0-2, diesels Euro 0-4 and mopeds and motorcycles Euro 0-2. Every Sunday in the period is an ecological Sunday, with the ban extended to Euro 5 diesels. The bans do not apply on public transport strike days and on some holidays, including 24 November; some corridors, car parks and the area of the Santa Maria Nuova hospital remain accessible, and on event days there is a temporary exemption around the Mapei Stadium.

Emergencies, heating and local measures

The Arpae bulletin issued on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays triggers the emergency measures: a ban from 8:00 to 19:00 extended to Euro 5 diesels, and bans on slurry spreading and on biomass heaters below "5 stars" where an alternative exists. Heating may be switched on from 1 November, with indoor temperature limits and a ban on stoves below "4 stars" and open fireplaces in homes with another system.

From 1 October to 31 December 2026 the municipality adds further voluntary measures: the threshold of 25 exceedances of the daily PM10 limit that triggers additional measures under PAIR 2030 has not been reached, but since 1 January 2026 the Timavo station had already recorded 19: a ban on biomass heating where an alternative exists, a total ban on outdoor burning except on 24 November, more traffic checks, smart working coordinated by the area mobility manager and street cleaning without leaf blowers.
