Messina

A city on the Strait, Sicily's gateway for those arriving from the mainland: ferries to Villa San Giovanni run day and night, Blu Jet fast ships also go to Reggio Calabria. Destroyed by the 1908 earthquake and tsunami and rebuilt. A university founded in 1548 with four campuses; in the city a tram and an ATM bus network that reaches the villages.

Overview

In short

Messina faces Calabria across the Strait. From the Rada San Francesco, Caronte & Tourist ferries cross to Villa San Giovanni in about twenty minutes, 24 hours a day, with departures guaranteed every 40 minutes; Blu Jet fast passenger ships (FS group) link the port with Villa San Giovanni and Reggio Calabria.

Today's city is largely the one rebuilt after 28 December 1908, when a magnitude 7.1 earthquake and the tsunami that followed nearly destroyed Messina and Reggio Calabria (see Climate and risks).
