Overview

What kind of city

Mantua is a provincial capital on the Lombard Po plain. The UNESCO entry describes it as a city of Roman origin renovated and extended in the 15th and 16th centuries under the Gonzaga, with an irregular layout that records successive stages of growth, an 11th-century rotunda and a Baroque theatre. Since 2008 it has been on the World Heritage List in a serial property with Sabbioneta, the new town built in the second half of the 16th century by Vespasiano Gonzaga about thirty kilometres away.

The palace and the universities

The city's landmark is the Palazzo Ducale, the Gonzaga family's residence on Piazza Sordello: a complex of about 35,000 square metres with more than a thousand rooms, courtyards and Renaissance gardens, home to the Camera Picta frescoed by Mantegna. The city also hosts the Mantova campus of the Politecnico di Milano, seat of a UNESCO Chair.
