Cliffs and sea
South of the city the Calafuria nature reserve, about 115 hectares of Mediterranean scrub on red sandstone cliffs (the "panchina livornese"), runs from Marina del Boccale towards Quercianella past Castel Boccale and the Medici tower of Calafuria; the trails are marked and easy, with equipped and unequipped sea access points such as the Scogli Piatti.
Offshore, just over three miles from the port, the Meloria shoals have been a marine protected area since 2010, divided into zones A, B and C: guided trips and accompanied dives are allowed, and swimming is banned only in zone A.
Food and evenings
Cacciucco is celebrated in September at Cacciucco Pride; Livorno's signature street food is the torta in a "5 e 5". The Terrazza Mascagni is the evening walk by the sea, with small summer concerts in the gazebo; in the warm months the districts compete in the rowing races.
