Air and sea
ARPAT measures air quality in Livorno with the LI-Carducci, LI-Cappiello and LI-La Pira stations. According to the 2025 Environmental Data Yearbook, in 2023 and 2024 no station came close to the maximum number of daily PM10 exceedances, and annual means of PM10, PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide stayed below the limits; the highest nitrogen dioxide values are recorded on via Carducci.
The Livorno coast has 22 classified bathing areas; in the 2024 season almost all samples were compliant, with a few enterococci exceedances in some areas. The province hosts industrial plants subject to integrated environmental authorisation, including the ENI refinery.
Intense rain
On 9 and 10 September 2017 an exceptional weather event caused a flood in Livorno, Rosignano Marittimo and Collesalvetti; the Tuscany Region declared a regional state of emergency and funded urgent works and grants to residents and businesses. Those looking for a home near the city's watercourses can check the flood hazard in the municipality's planning documents.
