Getting around: AMA buses, TUA to Rome, slow train, car

L'Aquila has neither high-speed rail nor an airport: the main link is the TUA coach to Roma Tiburtina (about an hour and a half to two hours) on the A24 motorway. The AMA urban network links centre, outskirts, hospital, university and hamlets; the Terni–Sulmona railway is slow. The historic centre has a ZTL and park-and-ride car parks with escalators.

The urban network

AMA S.p.A. (Azienda Mobilità Aquilana), the Comune's company, runs the urban and suburban lines linking the historic centre with Pettino, Coppito (hospital and university), the Collemaggio terminal, the hamlets and the Pile industrial zone; frequencies are good on the main lines and reduced towards the hamlets, especially at weekends. The Collemaggio bus terminal, next to the basilica, is the hub for urban and regional lines. The historic centre is walkable; the slopes are tackled with escalators from the car parks.

Tickets

AMA tickets (single, day, monthly and annual passes, with reduced rates for students) are bought at outlets, on board with a surcharge and via the app; updated fares are on the AMA website and in the data below.

Rome, trains, airports

The essential link is with Rome: the regional company TUA runs the L'Aquila–Roma line with frequent coaches all day from the Collemaggio terminal to Tiburtina station (and in some cases to Roma Termini or Fiumicino airport), along the A24 motorway, taking about an hour and a half to two hours depending on traffic; it is the means used by commuters and students. The L'Aquila–Terni–Sulmona railway has few regional trains and long journey times: Rome via Terni takes more than three hours. The nearest airports are Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino (about two hours) and Pescara (about an hour and a half by car). Pescara and the Adriatic coast are reached by TUA coaches along the A25.

ZTL and cars

The historic centre has a camera-gated ZTL and pedestrian areas on the corso and in piazza Duomo; centre residents apply to the Comune for a permit. At the edges of the centre are park-and-ride car parks linked by escalators and lifts (Collemaggio, Castello, Terminal). To live in the hamlets, work in the industrial zone or go to the mountains a car is necessary; from mid-November to mid-April winter tyres or chains on board are compulsory on the roads of the basin and towards the Gran Sasso.
