Rail
The coast is served by the Adriatic line with Frecciarossa and Intercity stops at Pescara, Giulianova and Vasto-San Salvo and Trenitalia regional trains to Teramo (via Giulianova), Chieti, Ortona and Lanciano. The Pescara–Sulmona–Avezzano–Rome railway is single-track, not electrified in the Apennine section and takes about four hours; RFI is doubling and speeding it up with PNRR funds. L'Aquila is linked by train only to Terni, Rieti and Sulmona: for Rome people use TUA and Flixbus coaches (about one and a half to two hours to Tiburtina). The Sulmona–Carpinone line (towards Molise) runs only as the Fondazione FS tourist service "Transiberiana d'Italia".
Buses, airport, port
TUA (Società Unica Abruzzese di Trasporto) runs intercity buses across the region, coach links to Rome and Naples and the Sangritana railway; urban networks are separate (Pescara, L'Aquila, Teramo, Chieti). Abruzzo airport in Pescara has low-cost flights to some Italian and European cities; otherwise people use Rome Fiumicino, reachable by coach from L'Aquila and Pescara. From the port of Pescara, fast summer services to Croatia run in some years.
Roads
The A14 follows the coast; the A24 Rome–L'Aquila–Teramo crosses the Gran Sasso through its tunnel, and at Torano the A25 branches off towards Chieti and Pescara; both are under concession to Strada dei Parchi, which has run them again since 1 January 2024 after the ANAS management that began in 2022; tolls are among the highest per kilometre in Italy. Inland roads (SS17, SS83 Marsicana, SS5 Tiburtina Valeria) cross passes that require snow tyres or chains in winter. Outside the provincial capitals public transport shrinks to a few daily runs: village residents depend on cars.
