Genoa
Capital of Liguria and one of Italy's main container ports, a long, vertical city of over 560,000 residents between sea and mountains. Average costs, a vast medieval old town, a university and a growing technology hub at Erzelli. Suits those working in the port, technology or research; less so those who want a flat, easy city.

Overview
What kind of city it is
Genoa stretches along more than thirty kilometres of coast, squeezed between the sea and the hills: the city reads in bands, from Ponente (Voltri, Pegli, Sestri Ponente, Cornigliano, Sampierdarena) to the centre (old town, Castelletto, Carignano, Foce) to Levante (Albaro, Sturla, Quarto, Quinto, Nervi), plus the two inland valleys of the Polcevera and the Bisagno. It is the capital of Liguria and of the Metropolitan City; the Comune is divided into nine Municipi.
The old town is one of the largest in Europe, a maze of alleys (caruggi) running from the Porto Antico to via Garibaldi; around it lies the nineteenth-century city of via XX Settembre and the Castelletto hill, reached by public lifts and funiculars. Changes in level are part of daily life.
Economy and who it suits
The economy is tied to the port (containers, cruises, ferries), to shipbuilding and heavy industry (Fincantieri at Sestri Ponente, Ansaldo Energia, Leonardo, Hitachi Rail), to an expanding technology hub (IIT, the Erzelli Great Campus with the new home of the Polytechnic School), to tourism and services. The University of Genoa, founded in 1481, is the region's only one.
Housing costs are lower than in Milan, Bologna and Florence, with large differences between the residential Levante and the working-class Ponente. Newcomers should expect an ageing city whose population has been shrinking for decades, fragile road infrastructure and a reserved character.
Seasons
The climate is Mediterranean and mild, with cool rather than cold winters and summers tempered by the sea breeze; the autumn months bring intense rainfall that has caused historic floods along the Bisagno. The regional alert system (Allerta Liguria) punctuates city life from October to December, with school closures on red-alert days.
