Operators, network, tickets
Since November 2021 all road public transport in Tuscany is run by Autolinee Toscane (at bus): in Florence it operates the urban network, with frequent lines between the station, the Duomo, the Oltrarno and the districts, the small electric buses of the centre (C1-C4) and night services. The tram is run by GEST: line T1 goes from Villa Costanza (Scandicci, with a park-and-ride on the motorway) to Santa Maria Novella station and Careggi hospital; T2 links Peretola airport to Novoli, Santa Maria Novella and, with the variant inaugurated in January 2025, piazza della Libertà and piazza San Marco. Tickets and passes are integrated between bus and tram and are bought in the app, on board by contactless card or at resellers; the monthly urban pass covers both networks.
Trams under construction and urban trains
The tram network is expanding: line 3.2 from piazza della Libertà to Bagno a Ripoli is funded and under construction, line 3.2.2 towards Rovezzano and line 4 from Leopolda to Le Piagge and Campi Bisenzio are at the design and approval stage, with works that alter traffic for years. The Region publishes the status of the lines. Florence has no metro; regional trains between Santa Maria Novella, Rifredi, Campo di Marte, Sesto Fiorentino and Prato act as a suburban service.
Trains and airports
Santa Maria Novella is the main station, in the centre, with Frecce and Italo trains to Bologna (half an hour), Milan, Rome (an hour and a half) and Naples; Campo di Marte and Rifredi serve regional and some fast trains; the new underground high-speed station at Belfiore has been under construction for years. Amerigo Vespucci airport at Peretola is five kilometres from the centre and is reached by the T2 tram in twenty minutes; Pisa, with more international flights, is an hour by train from Santa Maria Novella.
- ZTL: the historic centre is a limited traffic zone with electronic gates on weekdays and, on summer weekends, at night too; permits for residents and loading are requested from the municipality. Entering without a permit means a fine for each gate.
- Scudo Verde: a low-emission zone with electronic gates on the urban boundary that records entries and bans vehicles of the oldest emission classes; rules and exemptions are on the municipality's mobility page and change in phases.
- Parking: in the centre almost only paid or for residents; multi-storey car parks at the station, the Parterre and Villa Costanza (T1 tram) to leave the car outside town.
- Bikes and scooters: a flat city on the valley floor with paths along the Arno and the viali; bike sharing and shared e-scooters are widespread; many thefts, so use a solid lock.
