Food and markets
The Campobasso table is that of inland Molise: cavatelli with pork sauce or broccoli, tagliatelle with truffles (Molise is one of Italy's largest producers), caciocavallo and scamorze from Alto Molise, lamb and mutton, sausages and soppressate, pampanella (chilli-spiced pork, from San Martino in Pensilis), legume soups, and for dessert caragnoli and ferratelle; the wine is Tintilia, a native grape. La Molisana pasta is made in the city.
The weekly market and producers' markets are the places for local produce; the centre has delicatessens, cheese shops and historic pastry shops.
Nature and parks
The villa De Capoa, in the centre, is the city's historic garden with centuries-old trees and statues; the castle park and the old town stairways are the walks with a view. Outside the city: the Matese with its lake and Campitello (skiing, hiking, mountain biking), the drove roads for walking and cycling, the WWF reserves of Guardiaregia-Campochiaro with gorges and the San Nicola waterfall, the Monte Vairano woods. The sea is at Termoli, an hour's drive.
Sport
Campobasso football club plays at the Nuovo Romagnoli stadium in Selvapiana; the city has a tradition in basketball (La Molisana Magnolia Campobasso in women's Serie A) and cycling. The PalaUnimol and municipal facilities host grassroots sport; in winter Campitello Matese is the locals' ski resort.
Evenings and free things
Evenings concentrate along corso Vittorio Emanuele and the streets of the Murat centre, with bars, pubs and pizzerias, and in the old town with a few recovered venues; in summer the squares host concerts and the film festival. The Teatro Savoia has a drama and music season. Free: the old town and the castle (exterior), the villa De Capoa, the Procession of the Misteri, the drove roads and the Matese trails, the first Sunday of the month at the Samnite Museum.
