Costs: among the cheapest of Italy's regional capitals
Campobasso has rents, house prices and restaurant prices among the lowest of Italy's regional capitals. Heating, for the long winter, and the car, needed to move outside the city, weigh more. The Murat centre is the most sought-after zone; the old town and the outer districts are the cheapest.

What costs more
Heating is the highest item compared with the national average: at 700 m the heating season is long and gas bills are significant, especially in 1960s–1970s blocks with poor insulation. A car is almost indispensable to reach Termoli, Isernia, the industrial zones and the rest of the region, with fuel costs increased by distances. Some goods and services (branded clothing, electronics) have less competition than in big cities.
What costs less
Rents and purchase prices are among the lowest of Italy's provincial capitals, with supply exceeding demand because of population decline. Eating out, local produce at the market and daily life cost less than elsewhere; urban transport has moderate passes (see data). Parking is easy and largely free outside the centre.

Cheaper zones
The old town below the castle has very cheap houses, often needing renovation, with stairways and alleys; the San Giovanni, Colle dell'Orso and Cappuccini districts offer large 1970s–1980s flats at moderate rents; the Murat centre and the area around the public gardens are the most expensive, while remaining affordable. Vazzieri is the student zone, near the university.
Tourist tax
The Comune di Campobasso applies a tourist tax in accommodation; rates and exemptions are published on the municipal website.
