Identity: a university wanted by the city, a Longobard and Roman heritage
Brescia's university grew out of twenty years of local initiatives, from the 1964 school of industrial administration to engineering and medicine courses, up to the 1982 law. The city's heritage ranges from Roman Brixia to the Longobard monastery of Santa Giulia, both run by Fondazione Brescia Musei.

A university born from the territory
The university's history says a lot about the city. The first attempt to bring university courses to Brescia, in the early 1960s, was an engineering branch of the Politecnico di Milano, abandoned because of its cost. In 1964 a two-year School of Industrial Administration opened, administered by the University of Parma and promoted by the Associazione Industriale Bresciana and the Fondazione Milziade Tirandi. Engineering and Medicine grew with the Consorzio Universitario Bresciano and, from 1969, the Ente Universitario della Lombardia Orientale: mechanical engineering classes began in 1969–70, medicine courses in 1971 with the universities of Milan and Parma. Law 590 of 14 August 1982 established the Università degli Studi di Brescia.
Heritage and institutions
Fondazione Brescia Musei runs Santa Giulia and Brixia, recognised by UNESCO in 2011 within the serial site of the Longobards in Italy, the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, the Castle with the "Luigi Marzoli" Arms Museum and the "Leonessa d'Italia" Risorgimento Museum, the Memorial to the victims of terrorism and political violence and the Cinema Nuovo Eden. The municipality is seated at Piazza della Loggia 1 and meets the neighbourhoods through the "Brescia inComune" initiative.
