Climate and air: nitrogen dioxide and traffic restrictions
Air-quality measures in Bolzano focus above all on nitrogen dioxide (NO2): the provincial NO2 Programme (2023 revision) provides for traffic restrictions issued by mayoral ordinance, normally on weekdays at the morning and afternoon peaks. The environment agency publishes measurements and exceedances.

The aim of the provincial measures is to meet the NO2 limit for health protection and keep cutting nitrogen oxide emissions, in view of stricter future limits. The framework is the NO2 Programme, in the revision approved by the provincial government in March 2023: traffic restrictions are issued by mayoral ordinance and normally apply all year on weekdays, from 7:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00; municipalities may extend them in particular situations. The vehicle classes and the area concerned are set by Bolzano's municipal ordinance.
The provincial environment agency publishes real-time measurements, exceedances, station data and annual reports, and runs a grant for replacing old wood-fired systems of 35 kW or more.
