The university
The Università della Valle d'Aosta – Université de la Vallée d'Aoste was established in 2000 and is a non-state university recognised by the Ministry of University and Research. It has two departments (Economics and Political Sciences; Human and Social Sciences) and offers bachelor's and master's degrees in economics and management, political science and international relations, languages and communication for tourism, psychology and primary education, plus master's courses and doctorates. The main campus is the new university hub in the former Testafochi barracks, in the centre.
Bilingualism is a distinctive trait: some courses are taught in French and the university cooperates with universities in Savoy, French-speaking Switzerland and Québec. Classes are small and contact with lecturers direct. The town also hosts the Conservatoire de la Vallée d'Aoste and the Istituto musicale, and the Foundation for tourism vocational training.
Student support and housing
There is no separate student-support agency: the Region pays scholarships and allowances to university students resident in the Valley, including those studying outside the region, through annual calls on the regional portal; the university manages its own fee waivers and contributions. There are no public university residences in town; students from elsewhere find rooms through the university's housing notice board, mostly in the station area and the Quartiere Cogne. The canteen is under agreement.
Students who do not find their programme in Aosta mostly go to Turin (Politecnico and University, two hours by train or coach), more rarely to Milan or Grenoble.
