Sectors

The labour market is among the tightest in Italy: South Tyrol has the lowest unemployment in the country and many firms struggle to find staff, especially in tourism and crafts. In Trentino the main sectors are tourism, cooperative agriculture, engineering, construction and, in Trento and Rovereto, research (Fondazione Bruno Kessler, university) and services. The provincial public sector is a major employer in both provinces; in Bolzano it requires the bilingualism certificate at the level set for the role.

Seasonal work

Seasonal work is the most common entry route: hotels, mountain huts, lifts, ski schools and catering hire for the winter (December–April) and summer (June–September) seasons, often with accommodation. The apple harvest (September–October) in Val di Non, Val Venosta and Bassa Atesina employs thousands of seasonal workers, largely foreign. People living near the Brenner can work in Austria, but cross-border commuting is limited.

Employment services

Public employment services are provincial: in Trentino the Agenzia del Lavoro runs the job centres, traineeships and active policies; in South Tyrol the Province's Labour Department, with its job-placement centres and the Labour Market Observatory publishing monthly data. The two provinces also have their own supplementary contracts and allowances (for example provincial family allowances).
