Statute and languages

Piedmont is an ordinary-statute region. Provincial functions around Turin are exercised by the Metropolitan City. The official language is Italian; national law 482/1999 protects in the Alpine valleys the Occitan (Cuneo and Turin valleys), Franco-Provençal (Turin valleys), French and Walser communities (Alagna Valsesia and other municipalities of the Valsesia, in the province of Vercelli; Macugnaga, Formazza and other municipalities of the VCO). Piedmontese is recognised as heritage by a regional law, not as a national minority language.

Holidays

There are no regional civil holidays: national ones apply, plus each municipality's patron saint (in Turin St John the Baptist, 24 June, when municipal offices close).
