Rail
Trenord, owned by Regione Lombardia and Trenitalia, operates the whole regional network: suburban S lines through the Milan rail link, regional trains to every province, links to Malpensa (Malpensa Express) and to Canton Ticino (TILO). The network is the busiest in Italy and suffers delays and cancellations at peak times. High-speed rail connects Milan with Turin, Bologna, Rome and Brescia-Verona.
Integrated fares
Io Viaggio Ovunque in Lombardia is the regional pass valid on trains, metro, buses and boats across the whole region, in daily, monthly and annual versions; Io Viaggio in Famiglia gives free travel to minor children. In the Milan and Monza area the Integrated Fare System of the Mobility Basin (STIBM) applies, with concentric zones and a single ticket for metro, buses and Trenord trains. The other provincial capitals have local companies with their own fares.
Airports, lakes, passes
Milan Malpensa (MXP, intercontinental, Malpensa Express train) and Linate (LIN, served by metro line M4) are run by SEA; Milan Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) is the big low-cost airport; Brescia Montichiari has few flights. On lakes Maggiore, Como and Garda, Navigazione Laghi runs scheduled boats and ferries (including car ferries on Garda and on Como between Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Cadenabbia). The Stelvio, Gavia and Spluga Alpine passes close in winter; Tonale and Aprica stay open. From Tirano station the Rhaetian Railway's Bernina train, a UNESCO site, departs.
