Where and in which language
Trieste is one of the European cities with the most researchers per inhabitant: besides SISSA and the University, the ICTP (International Centre for Theoretical Physics), ICGEB, Area Science Park and the Elettra synchrotron host foreigners; English is the working language in these institutes, while English-taught degrees at the universities are limited to some master's programmes. Udine has a small-to-medium university with good ties to Friulian firms. Housing costs less than in Padua or Bologna.
Grants and halls
Student support is managed by ARDIS (Regional Agency for the Right to Study), the single body for Trieste, Udine, Gorizia and Pordenone: annual call for grants, beds in student houses, canteens and contributions, with online application and the university ISEE. The special statute lets the Region fund the system with its own money and add measures (for example contributions for commuting students).
