Structure
Fewer than one in two working-age residents of Campania are in work, the unemployment rate is roughly double the national average and the share of young people neither studying nor working is among the highest. Undeclared work is widespread in retail, construction, agriculture and personal services. The sectors hiring most are tourism and catering (Naples, Sorrento, Amalfi, Ischia, Capri), retail, logistics (ports of Naples and Salerno, Nola and Marcianise freight villages), health care and public administration. Industry holds on in aerospace and automotive at Pomigliano d'Arco, shipbuilding in Castellammare, rail, pharmaceuticals and canning in the Agro nocerino-sarnese.
Hubs and seasonality
Naples has in recent years grown a digital services and research hub in the San Giovanni a Teduccio area (Apple Developer Academy, Cisco, Accenture, Deloitte) and in the Centro Direzionale, hiring computer science and engineering graduates; Salerno has a fabric of small firms and port logistics; Caserta and Benevento host agri-food and public employment; Avellino retains shrinking engineering and textile industries. Seasonal tourism work runs from Easter to October on the coasts and islands, with short contracts and staff housing very hard to find. Agriculture in the Sele plain and the Caserta area employs many foreign workers.
Migration and services
ISTAT and SVIMEZ (a research association, not an official source) document for Campania the largest absolute outflow of residents to the Centre-North and abroad among Italian regions, with a growing share of graduates. Job centres report to the Campania Region, which has strengthened them with new hires and runs the regional employment portal and the GOL programme. Businesses that invest benefit from the ZES unica tax credit and the single authorisation; conditions and deadlines change with each budget law.
