What housing there is
The typical stock is the interwar middle-class block: five or six floors, courtyard, concierge, three- to five-room flats with high ceilings, often with central heating. Towards piazzale Loreto, viale Abruzzi and the Lambrate railway, post-war reconstruction blocks with smaller units prevail. There are student residences run by the Politecnico and private operators in the quarter and around Lambrate, and public-housing buildings in Municipio 3 mainly beyond the railway (Lambrate, Feltre); ALER offers temporary housing for out-of-town students across the whole city, subject to income and distance requirements.
The rental market
Demand for rooms from Politecnico and Statale students is the dominant force: three- and four-room flats are often let room by room on transitional student contracts, and single rooms near Piola and piazza Leonardo go between July and September. Families compete with this demand and tend to look in the more inward streets (via Ampère, via Saldini) or towards Lambrate and Casoretto. The planned move of Statale faculties to MIND could shift part of the student demand: anyone letting to students should factor this in over the coming years.
Cars, Area B and parking
Città Studi is outside Area C and inside Area B. Parking is in blue and yellow bays with resident permits by sector; around the Politecnico and the via Venezian hospitals spaces run out during lecture and visiting hours, while in the evening parking is easier than in the centre. Many 1930s blocks have no garages; those who need one rent it separately.
