Living in Brera
Period palazzi and renovated case di ringhiera, almost no public housing, strong competition from short lets. The whole quarter is inside Area C and Area B; parking is almost only on blue (paid) and yellow (resident) bays with a resident permit.

What housing there is
The stock is 17th–19th-century palazzi with courtyards, case di ringhiera (balcony-access tenements) nearly all converted into lofts or upmarket flats, and well-to-do early-20th-century blocks between via Solferino, via Moscova and via San Marco. Large floor plans and penthouses dominate sales; small rental units are often taken out of the residential market by tourist short lets. Public housing (ALER or municipal case popolari) is virtually absent from the quarter.
The rental market
Brera is among the most expensive areas of Milan both to buy and to rent. Anyone looking for a long-term contract (4+4, or 3+2 at agreed rent) finds little supply and competes with transitional contracts and tourist use; it pays to widen the search to Moscova, Garibaldi or just outside the Bastioni. Listings turn over quickly: viewings have to be arranged within days, not weeks. For reference values see the data block in the neighbourhood overview and the city's OMI quotations.
Cars, Area C and parking
The quarter lies entirely inside the Cerchia dei Bastioni, i.e. inside Area C (a weekday access charge, with concessions for residents) and Area B, the low-emission zone covering almost the whole city. The inner streets are pedestrian or camera-controlled ZTL. On-street parking is almost only paid (blue bays) or resident-only (yellow bays): the resident permit for your parking sector entitles you to the yellow and blue bays of that sector. Private garages and spaces are rare and expensive. Anyone arriving with a car should count it as a fixed cost or give it up.
