Work: port, insurance, science and public employment

A service economy with four pillars: port and logistics, insurance (Generali, Allianz), scientific research and regional public administration. A narrower private job market than the big northern cities; good openings for scientific profiles and in logistics.

Port and logistics

The port of Trieste, run by the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea, ranks among Italy's leading ports by tonnage thanks to the oil terminal of the Transalpine pipeline, rail traffic to central Europe and the international Free Port, a special customs regime of Habsburg origin. Around the port work freight forwarders, logistics and rail operators, shipbuilding (Fincantieri has its registered and head office in the city) and the Wärtsilä plant at Bagnoli della Rosandra.

Insurance, research, public sector

Trieste is Italy's insurance capital: Assicurazioni Generali was founded here in 1831 and keeps its registered office in the city, and Allianz S.p.A. also has its registered office here; service, IT and consulting firms cluster around them. The scientific system (University, SISSA, ICTP, Area Science Park, Elettra, INFN, OGS, INAF) employs thousands of researchers and technicians and generates spin-offs; illycaffè has its headquarters and plant in Trieste. The autonomous Region, the municipality, the health service and the Port are major employers.

Job market

Job seekers in the private sector find a smaller and less dynamic market than in Milan, Bologna or Padua, with good prospects in logistics, insurance, research and seasonal tourism. The Venezia Giulia Chamber of Commerce (Trieste and Gorizia) publishes business data; coworking spaces are concentrated in the centre and in the Porto Vecchio redevelopment area. The provincial employment rate is above the national average and unemployment below it, in line with the North-East.
