Operator, network and tickets
Urban transport is run by Trieste Trasporti S.p.A., part of the regional TPL FVG consortium since 2020: the network is bus-only (there is no metro), with very frequent lines along the waterfront-station-Barcola axis and up to the hillside districts, an on-demand night service (TSonDemand) and boat lines to Muggia. Tickets and passes are bought in the app, by contactless card on board via the Eva validators, at ticket offices and resellers; the monthly or annual "whole network" urban pass is valid on all city lines, tram included.
Opicina tram
The Opicina tram (line 2) is a historic 1902 tramway that climbs from the centre to the plateau with a funicular-assisted section. Suspended in 2016 after an accident, it reopened in 2025, was stopped again after a funicular cable failure in October 2025 and was re-authorised by the Region in July 2026 with reduced capacity and a temporary terminus at Piazza Dalmazia, pending works at the Piazza Oberdan terminus. Check the service status on the Trieste Trasporti website before relying on it.
Trains and airport
Trieste Centrale station, north of Borgo Teresiano, has regional links to Udine, Gorizia and Venice and long-distance trains to Venice, Milan and Rome and, with a change or seasonal direct services, to Ljubljana and Vienna. Trieste Airport is at Ronchi dei Legionari, about 35 km north-west: it has a railway station connected to the terminal by a footbridge, with direct regional trains from Trieste Centrale, as well as buses. Frequent flyers also use Venice and Ljubljana.
- ZTL: the historic centre between Cavana, Piazza Unità and Borgo Teresiano has camera-controlled limited traffic zones; residents apply to the municipality for permits.
- Parking: in the centre almost all on-street parking is paid (blue lines); the most used garages are Park San Giusto, Molo IV and the Silos next to the station.
- Cycling: the city is hilly and the wind discourages daily cycling, but there is a bike-sharing service and a flat cycle path along the waterfront to Barcola; on the Karst the former Trieste-Erpelle railway is a cycling and walking path.
- On foot: the centre is compact and walking is the fastest way around; the climbs to San Giusto and the hillside districts are steep, with public stairways such as the Scala dei Giganti.
