Cost of living: the most affordable northern capital

Rents and house prices clearly below Milan, Bologna and Florence; cheap urban transport and a walkable city. Groceries, utilities and tourist-area dining cost about the same as elsewhere.

What costs less

Among the regional capitals of northern Italy, Trieste has the lowest property quotations: the nineteenth-century building stock and a population that has been shrinking for decades keep rents well below Milan, Bologna and Florence, even in central areas. The gap between centre and outer districts is moderate; San Giacomo, Servola, Valmaura and Borgo San Sergio are the cheapest areas, Barcola and the hillside districts with sea views the most expensive.

What costs the same as elsewhere

Groceries, utilities and services cost in line with the rest of the North-East. Bars and restaurants on Piazza Unità and the waterfront charge tourist-city prices; the traditional buffets and the osmize farm taverns on the Karst remain cheap. A car is hardly needed in town, but central parking is paid and scarce.

Typical choices

Students usually live in shared rooms in the districts near the University (San Giovanni, via Fabio Severo, Barriera Vecchia) or in ARDiS student residences; workers choose studios and one-bedroom flats in the centre or in Roiano and San Vito. The monthly urban pass from Trieste Trasporti covers the whole network, Opicina tram included.
