Getting around: SAIS city buses, Ortigia ZTL, train to the airport

Since 2023 urban transport has been run by SAIS Autolinee with a 12-line network, including two north–south trunk lines and an Ortigia circular. Ortigia has a limited-traffic zone whose hours the Comune has changed several times: check the ordinance in force. Trains reach the Catania Fontanarossa airport stop.

City buses

The urban network, presented in September 2023 and run by SAIS Autolinee, has 12 colour-coded lines: two trunk lines crossing the city from north to south (Scala Greca and Santa Panagia), eight circulars (Akradina, Ortigia, Grottasanta, Santa Lucia, Epipoli, no. 23 Strada del Mare and nos. 21 and 22 to Cassibile) and the Belvedere and Cemetery lines; trunk and circular lines meet at interchange stops. Timetables and the map are in the SAIS app. According to a Comune document with data to May 2026, there were about 640,000 passengers in 2024 and the projection for 2026 is 870,000; developments under consideration include combined parking + bus tickets and integration with the ZTL.

Ortigia and the ZTL

Car access to Ortigia is governed by a limited-traffic zone whose hours have changed several times. In 2021 the trial activated it in the evenings and on Sundays and holidays, with shuttles from the Via Elorina car park; an ordinance in force from 24 December 2025 to 31 March 2026 limited it to Fridays and pre-holidays from 20:00 to midnight, Saturdays from 17:00 and Sundays and holidays from 11:00, with loading windows in the morning. Trains and airport

The reference airport is Catania Fontanarossa: on weekdays trains from Syracuse arrive at the "Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa" stop between about 6:00 and 20:30 and leave between about 6:10 and 21:00; from the stop an AMTS bus goes to the terminal, with a ticket that can be bought together with the train ticket.
