Leisure: the papyrus of the Ciane, the salt pans, nearby reserves

On the city's doorstep the Fiume Ciane e Saline di Siracusa reserve protects the papyrus along the river and a wetland for migratory birds. In the province there are the reserves of Vendicari, Cavagrande del Cassibile, Pantalica and the Anapo Valley, and the Priolo salt pans. In early July Ortigia hosts the Feste Archimedee.

Ciane and salt pans

The Fiume Ciane e Saline di Siracusa nature reserve, established in 1984 and managed by the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Siracusa, covers about 317 hectares on the city's outskirts. It protects the papyrus (Cyperus papyrus) growing along the Ciane, the river that flows into the Porto Grande near the salt pans, and the salt pans themselves, a wetland important as a stopover for migratory birds, including black-winged stilt, flamingo and cormorant.

  • Oasi faunistica di Vendicari nature reserve.
  • Cavagrande del Cassibile nature reserve.
  • Pantalica, Valle dell'Anapo and Torrente Cava Grande nature reserve.
  • Saline di Priolo nature reserve, managed by LIPU (the Italian bird-protection league).

Feste Archimedee

From 2 to 4 July 2026 Ortigia hosted the 13th edition of the Feste Archimedee.
