Identity: the historic capital of Valtellina, a town with mountain hamlets
The municipal statute presents Sondrio as a town of very ancient origin and always the administrative capital of Valtellina, in the middle of the Italian Alps. Its territory, entirely mountainous, includes the urban area and the hamlets of Triangia, Ponchiera, Arquino, Mossini-Sant'Anna and Triasso; the town hall includes the historic Palazzo Pretorio on piazza Campello.

How the town describes itself
According to article 1 of the statute, Sondrio was the seat of the Grisons government, capital of the Department of Adda and Oglio under the Cisalpine Republic and, under Austrian rule, capital of a province that also included the Bormio area and Val Chiavenna, a role it kept after the unification of Italy. The statute stresses the town's function as a link between the civilisations of central and southern Europe and its role as a provincial capital, home to bodies providing provincial, regional and state services.
Territory and hamlets
The Comune describes itself as made up of settlements spread over an entirely mountainous territory and commits to keeping people living in its upper part, to protect it from abandonment and decay. Besides the urban area, the statute lists the hamlets of Triangia, Ponchiera, Arquino, Mossini-Sant'Anna and Triasso, plus other smaller settlements (località).
Seat and symbols
The seat is the Palazzo Municipale, which comprises the historic Palazzo Pretorio on piazza Campello and the adjoining building on corso Italia. The Comune holds the title of Città (city); its coat of arms and gonfalon were recognised by decree of the President of the Council of Ministers of 28 October 1946.
