In the city
In the city, work is mostly public: Basilicata Region, Province, Comune, state offices and court, the San Carlo regional hospital and the Potenza health authority, the University of Basilicata and schools. The private sector consists of retail, professional services, construction and small businesses; there are no large private employers and the skilled market is limited, with an emigration of graduates to the Centre-North that has continued for decades. Employment and unemployment rates are in the data block.
Melfi and oil
Two hubs outside the city weigh on Potenza's economy. At San Nicola di Melfi, about 50 km away, the Stellantis plant (formerly FIAT-SATA) with its supplier park is the region's largest industrial site and employs commuters from the whole province. In the Val d'Agri Eni runs the Viggiano oil centre, serving what Eni describes as the largest onshore field in western Europe, and at Corleto Perticara TotalEnergies the Tempa Rossa project: oil royalties fund regional measures (including the gas contribution for resident households) and local contracts, but direct employment is modest and the issue has divided regional public opinion for years.
Businesses and remote work
The Basilicata Chamber of Commerce, based in Potenza, publishes business data and runs the desk for new businesses. Coworking spaces are few and small; remote workers rely on home, libraries or spaces made available by the Comune and the university. Fibre optic covers the centre and the main districts.
