Visiting Potenza
Not a tourist city but a good base: Via Pretoria, the Cathedral of San Gerardo, Torre Guevara, the National Archaeological Museum and the Musmeci Bridge. Day trips to Matera (UNESCO), the Lucanian Dolomites with the Volo dell'Angelo, the Vulture with Melfi and Venosa, Maratea on the Tyrrhenian. Late May for Saint Gerard.

What to see
The historic centre is covered in an hour along Via Pretoria, the city's living room: the Cathedral of San Gerardo (rebuilt in the eighteenth century on a medieval plan), the church of San Francesco with its Gothic portal, the Torre Guevara, remnant of the castle, and the Teatro Francesco Stabile (1881). The "Dinu Adamesteanu" National Archaeological Museum of Basilicata, in Palazzo Loffredo, displays grave goods of the Lucanian and Oenotrian peoples; the provincial archaeological museum and the civic gallery complete the offer. The modern symbol is the Musmeci Bridge (1976), a reinforced-concrete shell viaduct protected as a cultural asset, visible from the Basentana road. The escalators themselves are a stop.
- Matera (UNESCO, the Sassi): an hour by car or coach; FAL rail connections with a change.
- Lucanian Dolomites: Castelmezzano and Pietrapertosa, with the Volo dell'Angelo (zip line between the two villages, May to October).
- Vulture: Melfi castle, Venosa (Horace, the unfinished abbey), the Monticchio lakes, Aglianico wineries.
- Lagopesole castle and Acerenza, with its Romanesque cathedral.
- Maratea and the Tyrrhenian coast: about an hour and a half, the Christ the Redeemer statue and beaches.
- Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri National Park and the archaeological site of Grumentum.
- Sellata and Pierfaone: small ski stations and trails 20 minutes from the city.
Seasons and overnight stays
Spring and early autumn are the best periods; summer suits those escaping the heat of the coast. The weekend around 29–30 May, with the Parade of the Turks and the feast of Saint Gerard, is the busiest time and requires booking accommodation in advance. The accommodation offer is limited (mid-range hotels, B&Bs in the centre); for any tourist tax check the conditions when booking with the property or on the Comune's website.
