Region and Province
Potenza hosts the Presidency, Executive and Council of the Basilicata Region (offices in Via Verrastro) and is the capital of the Province of Potenza, which groups 100 municipalities, almost all small and mountainous: the city is the administrative centre of a territory far larger than itself. The Comune is not divided into municipi or districts; the population has been slowly declining for years, as across the region (see data).
Languages
The Potenza dialect stands out from the surrounding Lucanian dialects for Gallo-Italic traits, a legacy of medieval settlers from Northern Italy shared with nearby Tito, Picerno and Pignola. The province is home to Arbëreshë (Italo-Albanian) communities recognised under the law on historic linguistic minorities: San Costantino Albanese, San Paolo Albanese, Barile, Ginestra and Maschito, where the language is still spoken and used in the Byzantine-rite liturgy.
Saint Gerard and the Parade of the Turks
The patron is Saint Gerard della Porta, bishop of Potenza who died in 1119. The feast is on 30 May, with the procession of the statue through the centre; on the evening of 29 May the Parata dei Turchi takes place, a historical costumed parade re-enacting a legendary raid repelled thanks to the saint's intervention, with flag-wavers, horsemen and floats. It is the city's identity event and draws back Potenza's emigrants too.
