Who covers the city
Potenza hosts the headquarters of ASP Basilicata, at via Torraca 2 (tel. 0971 310111), the health authority for the whole province, organised in four health districts: the city belongs to District 3 «Potenza-Alto Basento». The district provides residents with community health and social-care services.
Hospital and emergency department
The «San Carlo» hospital, the main site of the regional hospital trust, is classified as a level-II DEA (emergency and acceptance department) and is located in contrada Macchia Romana, via Potito Petrone (switchboard 0971 611111; public-relations line 800 006616). Out-of-hours doctor
The continuity-of-care service (ex guardia medica) is guaranteed in every municipality of the ASP, with clinic and home visits from 20.00 to 8.00 on weekdays and from 10.00 on Saturdays or other pre-holidays until 8.00 of the first working day. The on-call doctor can prescribe drugs for treatments that cannot be deferred, issue sickness certificates for up to three days and propose hospital admission.
Bookings
Visits and tests are booked through the regional CUP call centre on 800 814814, available from landlines and mobiles Monday to Friday from 7.00 to 19.00, with the doctor's prescription on the regional pad; only a few specialties can be booked without a prescription (including obstetrics and gynaecology, dentistry and the eyesight test in ophthalmology). The San Carlo hospital lists the same toll-free number as its CUP.
