What people eat
Lucanian cooking is rural and mountain food: peperoni cruschi (dried and fried peppers from Senise), lagane e ceci (pasta with chickpeas), strascinati and cavatelli with fried breadcrumbs, salt cod with cruschi, lamb and lucanica sausage, podolico caciocavallo and Filiano pecorino, bread from Matera and Avigliano. The wines are Aglianico del Vulture and whites from the same area; Lucanian craft beer has grown in recent years. Restaurants are trattorias and farm restaurants in the surroundings rather than trendy venues.
- Montereale park and Baden Powell park: urban green with views over the valley; free.
- Basento river park: cycle and footpath along the river, below the city.
- Teatro Francesco Stabile: drama and music season; concerts and festivals in the historic centre in summer.
- Alfredo Viviani stadium: Potenza Calcio matches.
- Sellata and Pierfaone (Abriola): skiing and snowshoeing in winter, trails in summer, 20 minutes away.
- Monte Vulture, the Monticchio lakes and the Lucanian Dolomites: day hikes.
Evenings and sport
Evening life takes place along Via Pretoria and in the squares of the historic centre, with bars, wine bars and pubs frequented mostly by students; venues close early compared with big cities and in winter the centre is quiet. Sports clubs offer football, volleyball and basketball at low cost; the city has a municipal pool, gyms and pitches, and the surrounding mountains are the real sports facility.
