ASP and District 42

Community care is run by the Azienda Sanitaria Provinciale of Palermo, based at via Giacomo Cusmano 24 (switchboard 0917031111); the city is District 42 of its network. Primary services run through the city's territorial care centres (PTA) — Centro, Casa del Sole, Biondo, Enrico Albanese and Guadagna — which host CUP desks, outpatient clinics and family counselling centres.

Hospitals and emergency departments

The Paolo Giaccone university hospital, at via del Vespro 129 (reached by bus 246 from the Stazione Centrale or from the Vespri rail stop), has an emergency department and an in-house CUP desk (bookings on cup.policlinico.pa.it). The ARNAS Civico and Di Cristina is the other big public hub with an emergency department and online bookings. The Ospedali Riuniti Villa Sofia–Cervello cover the north-west with three sites: Villa Sofia, the Cervello (via Trabucco 180) and the CTO (via Antonino Cassarà), with a live "Pronto Soccorso in tempo reale" feed on their website.

Out-of-hours care

Out-of-hours care (continuità assistenziale, former guardia medica) covers weekday nights from 20:00 to 8:00, pre-holidays from 10:00 and holidays around the clock; the list of posts of Palermo's District 42 is published by the ASP (Primary Care Department, tel. 091 7034901). For emergencies, call 118.

Bookings and co-payments

The ASP booking centre answers on the freephone 800.098.739 (Monday–Friday 8:30–14:30, with varying afternoon openings); you can also book online at sportello.asppalermo.org and, for first specialist visits, on the regional SovraCUP (sovracup.regione.sicilia.it, with an electronic prescription). Cancellations must be made at least three working days ahead; the co-payment (ticket) is paid via PagoPA, including at pharmacies with the QR code.

Opening hours, locations, numbers and rules change often: check the ASP Palermo website (asppalermo.org) and the individual hospitals' sites before going in person.
