Comune and documents

Registry services (residence, certificates, electronic ID card) are requested by appointment at the decentralised offices of the eight districts and at the central office; waiting times for the CIE can be long at peak periods, and many certificates can be downloaded online with a digital identity. Regional, state and health offices are spread between the historic centre and the Via Libertà–Notarbartolo area.

Waste

Waste collection is run by RAP, the Comune's company: in most of the city separated waste goes into street bins, while door-to-door collection operates in some districts (including Noce and parts of Politeama, Massimo, Strasburgo and Montepellegrino) with a calendar by fraction; municipal collection centres take bulky items, electronic waste and garden waste, with bulky pickup on request. Dumped waste and collection delays are a recurring problem in some areas, reported by residents themselves. The TARI waste tax is paid to the Comune.

Water, libraries, markets

Mains water is supplied by AMAP and is drinkable; in water-crisis periods (as from autumn 2024) AMAP applies rotation plans with scheduled suspensions by zone, published on its website: anyone looking for a home should ask whether the building has a tank and pump. Gas is distributed by AMG Energia. For reading and study there are the Casa Professa municipal library, the Sicilian Region's central library on the Cassaro and the university libraries. Daily shopping is done at the historic markets (Ballarò, Capo, Vucciria, Borgo Vecchio) and neighbourhood supermarkets; weekly street markets cover the outskirts.
