Costs: lower than Rome and Milan, with exceptions
Naples costs less than the big northern cities for rent, groceries and eating out, but the old centre and the seaside districts have seen sharp rises with tourism. Integrated public transport is cheap. The tourist tax rose in early 2026 and again in March 2026. The cheapest zones are the eastern and northern outskirts and the Fuorigrotta-Soccavo belt.

What costs more
Chiaia, Posillipo and Vomero have rents and purchase prices comparable to northern cities. In the old centre, short-term rental pressure has pushed up rents for residents and reduced the supply of long contracts. Keeping a car is expensive: liability insurance is among the highest in Italy because of the province's accident rates, garages are rare and costly, parking is paid or difficult almost everywhere.
What costs less
Grocery shopping in neighbourhood markets (Pignasecca, Porta Nolana, Antignano) and popular eating — pizza, fried-food shops, trattorias — remain among the cheapest of Italy's big cities. The monthly integrated UnicoCampania pass for the urban area covers metro, funiculars, buses, trams and urban trains of all operators at a moderate price (see data). Many state museums are free on the first Sunday of the month.

Cheaper zones
Fuorigrotta and Soccavo offer large flats at medium prices and are served by metro Line 2, the Cumana and Line 6: they are the typical choice for students and families (with the caveat of volcanic risk). The eastern zone (San Giovanni a Teduccio, Barra, Ponticelli) and the northern zone (Secondigliano, Miano, Piscinola) are the cheapest, with metro Line 1 links to the centre for the northern districts.
Tourist tax
Overnight visitors pay the Comune di Napoli a tourist tax per person per night, differentiated by accommodation category; rates were raised in early 2026 and a new resolution in March 2026 ordered a further increase of one euro per night, using the option granted to provincial capitals by the 2026 budget law. Current rates are published by the Comune.
