Two destructions
Foggia's urban history is marked by the 1731 earthquake and by the Second World War. On 15 July 1943, in a raid lasting about a quarter of an hour, aircraft of the US Ninth Air Force struck the airfields of the area and then the city, devastating the railway area. On 25 April 2007 the city of Foggia was awarded the gold medal for military valour.
Cathedral, underground spaces, Tavoliere
The cathedral, built in the 12th century and altered several times, still keeps much of its Romanesque façades. The city centre is crossed by a long series of underground spaces: the most important hypogeum is that of San Domenico. Foggia stands at the centre of the Tavoliere delle Puglie.
