Identity: Casertavecchia, San Leucio and piazza Vanvitelli
Besides the Royal Palace, the municipality presents three poles of the city: the medieval village of Casertavecchia on Monte Virgo, founded as a Lombard settlement; the Belvedere of San Leucio, linked to the silk colony created by Ferdinand IV; and piazza Vanvitelli, centre of the 19th-century city.

Casertavecchia
According to the municipality, Casertavecchia is an 8th-century Lombard settlement on Monte Virgo, at about 400 metres above sea level, overlooking the Caserta plain and the Gulf of Naples. At its heart is the Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo (1153–1197), Romanesque with Islamic and Gothic influences, with its bell tower, cloister and the remains of the Norman castle. The village is fully pedestrianised.
San Leucio
The Belvedere of San Leucio was founded in the 18th century as a silk production centre, at the heart of Ferdinand IV's project for a model town, «Ferdinandopoli», with equal rights, widespread education and in-community welfare. Today it houses the Silk Museum, with working historic looms, and is part of the network of Bourbon sites.
The centre
Piazza Vanvitelli is the main urban space of the centre, with a symbolic, social and commercial role; around it are corso Trieste, the 19th-century historic buildings, pedestrian areas and the main shops.
