Sectors
Cagliari concentrates Sardinia's public employment: the Autonomous Region with its departments and agencies, Comune and Metropolitan City, state offices, courts, university, health care (Brotzu hospital, Monserrato Policlinico, city hospitals). The private sector consists of retail, professional services, tourism and catering (fast-growing, seasonal), port and logistics with the canal port container terminal, construction. ICT has its Sardinian history here, with Tiscali's headquarters at Sa Illetta, the CRS4 research centre at Pula and an ecosystem of start-ups and software companies; at Sarroch, twenty minutes away, the Saras refinery is among the largest in the Mediterranean. Agri-food and wine matter in the Campidano plain.
Businesses, coworking, remote work
The Cagliari-Oristano Chamber of Commerce publishes business data and offers services to start a business; the Region funds programmes for start-ups and for the return of skilled workers, and Sardegna Ricerche runs the Pula technology park. Coworking spaces are numerous in the centre (Marina, Stampace, San Benedetto) and fibre covers the whole city, which has attracted remote workers from the mainland in recent years. The skilled market remains small and employment rates are below the national average (see data), though better than the rest of the island.
